Mullican's exclusive manufacturing process begins in the Appalachian Mountains of the Eastern United States, which are well known for their prime, slow-growing hardwoods. These hardwoods produce consistent grain patterns, color and durability.
In 2008, in response to consumer concern for the environment, particularly the way raw materials are being used for the hardwood industry, Mullican Flooring partnered with theNational Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) to develop a program designed to assure consumers that products are being produced in an environmentally friendly manner. The result of this collaboration, the Responsible Procurement Program (RPP), is an easy-to-identify labeling of hardwood products. This label allows consumers to see at a glance that the product has been harvested from non-controversial hardwood sources and in areas where timber growth exceeds loss.
After harvesting, the lumber is separated by species and transported to one of Mullican's four manufacturing facilities. Located in Virginia, West Virginia, New York, and the company's headquarters in Johnson City, Tennessee, each of these facilities features state-of-the-art machinery, reducing both labor costs and time, while enhancing the overall product. All of Mullican's manufacturing facilities hold the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Chain-of-Custody certification. This certification means all entities in Mullican's supply chain for these products, from the Appalachian forestlands to the distributors, also hold FSC-certification credentials and meet FSC standards of environmentally friendly forestry.
Each piece of lumber is processed to a uniform thickness prior to stacking, with sticks placed every 12 inches to separate pieces. By placing sticks just a foot apart, Mullican Flooring ensures the boards remain straight and unaltered in shape. The most efficient kiln-drying process in the industry is used to maximize stability and minimize movement of the wood during the warm and cold seasons. Each piece of wood is automatically checked by an in-line moisture meter. Mullican's experienced professional graders inspect every inch of the flooring during each step of the manufacturing process. Other specialists make sure the moisture content and milling are always consistent. As a result, the milling quality and grade of Mullican Flooring's products are consistently high.
All of Mullican's prefinished and unfinished solid flooring is produced in the United States, along with a substantial amount of our engineered floors. With intense oversight from Mullican's quality control engineers, the processes at all production sites adhere to current regulatory and sustainability standards.
Mullican features a complete line of prefinished solid flooring that includes oak, maple, walnut, hickory and beech species. The prefinished selections also offer character grade options, highlighting the knots, color variations and mineral streaks that naturally appear in the wood. Additional options include hand-sculpted and wire-brushed products for a more unique, customized look. Mullican offers many widths in both its unfinished and prefinished solid flooring, including 2 1/4-, 3-, 3 1/4-, 4-, and 5-inch options, along with a selection of exotic species.
In 2012, Mullican chose to increase its Made-in-America production by shifting a large segment of its engineered manufacturing from Asia to a renovated facility in Johnson City. The engineered manufacturing process is completed using Mullican's stringent quality control standards. The increased domestic presence provides greater flexibility and allows the company to get competitive products to market much quicker.
Mullican's prefinished engineered products are available in hickory, maple, oak and walnut, as well as a number of exotic species. These products are offered in 1/2-, 3/8-, 5/8-, and 9/16-inch thicknesses, and with 3-, 5-, 6-, 7-, 7.44-, and 9.45-inch width options. They also feature a variety of surface treatments and color combinations.
